Scania marine engine gets EMS

Designed to provide high performance, low operating costs and low exhaust emissions, the DI12M EMS is Scania?s latest 12-litre marine engine equipped with the Scania EMS engine management system. Intended for use in vessels such as ferries, rescue and combat craft, and vessels for transporting wind turbine blades, the DI12 is a turbocharged and charge-air cooled, 4-stroke and water-cooled diesel engine with direct injection. The addition of EMS means each individual engine can be programmed to meet specific application demands in term of engine revs and workload.

Lennart Hjelte, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Industrial & Marine Engines explains: “Electronic engine management enables us to optimize fuel consumption while keeping emissions as low as possible. It makes the engines more complex but also makes it possible to manage and control the performance.” The system also helps log engine performance and reports any problems that may arise.

The DI12M EMS is equipped with unit injectors – one per cylinder ? and fuel is injected into the combustion chamber under high pressure via electronic actuation to give better fuel economy and lower emissions. The new engine is part of Scania?s modular engine range, with the 12- and 16-litre diesel engines sharing vital engine components such as pistons, connecting rods, cylinder heads and cylinder liners.
