Scania?s latest engine features advanced electronic management system

Scania has updated its marine engine range with the introduction of the DI12M EMS, a 11.7-litre engine featuring Scania EMS, the company?s electronic engine management system.

The new unit has a high performance, low operating costs and low exhaust emissions. It is a turbocharged, charge-air cooled 4-stroke diesel engine with four valves per cylinder and individual cylinder heads ? output ranges from 221 kW (300hp) at 1,800 rpm to 478 kW (650 hp) at 2,200 rpm.

The Engine Management System (Scania EMS) fitted is an electronic system that makes it possible to programme each individual engine to meet specific demands for engine revs and workload. The EMS monitors and evaluates thousands of pieces of data to adjust injection timing and the amount of fuel injected to ensure optimum combustion and fuel consumption in response to operating conditions.

The EMS also logs engine performance, providing the owner with such information as power output at a specified engine speed, how long the engine has been running, water temperature and oil pressure during a cycle. The system also reports any problems that might have arisen.

The DI12M EMS engine is also equipped with unit injectors, one per cylinder. Injection is electronically actuated and fuel is injected into the combustion chamber under very high pressure, resulting in better fuel economy and lower emissions. The engine complies with both the US Tier 2 emission standards and the European Stage 3 rules, which will go into force in 2007.

The new engine forms part of Scania?s modular engine range in which the 12- and 16-litre diesel engines share several vital engine components such as pistons, cylinder heads and cylinder liners. The advantages are obvious ? common components are used in all engine types, which means easier parts handling and distribution. With similar workshop methods, maintenance work will also be more efficient. n
