Schottel RudderPropellers to power LDA’s new walk-to-work fleet
The vessels, designed by Norway’s SALT Ship Design, are to be constructed by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Ltd. (ZPMC) in China.
The decision follows a comprehensive assessment of available propulsion technologies. Arthur Barret, head of engineering, projects and innovation at LDA, stated: “Following a thorough evaluation of the available thruster options for our future Service Operation Vessels, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs has chosen a configuration based on four identical RudderPropellers Dynamic. This setup ensures optimal dynamic positioning performance, thanks to their advanced capabilities, which is key to maintaining maximum operability. We also place strong trust in the proven reliability of Schottel equipment.”
Each vessel will be fitted with four Schottel SRP 430 D units, each with an input power of 1,660 kW, to deliver precise dynamic positioning during offshore operations. The SRP-D series is engineered to enhance response times and positioning accuracy in demanding conditions, featuring accelerated thrust allocation and reinforced gear components for high-speed azimuth steering. A key design feature includes a vertically integrated electric drive (LE-Drive) with an eight-degree inclined shaft, which reduces hydrodynamic interaction between thrusters and the hull, thereby minimising thrust losses.
Developed specifically for offshore support roles, the SRP-D line addresses rising industry demands for reliability and efficiency in harsh environments. By enabling accurate station keeping even under adverse weather, the units extend operational availability and contribute to improved fuel efficiency. Since its market introduction in 2023, more than 50 units have been sold globally, underlining strong market acceptance.
These latest SOVs represent the next evolution of LDA’s walk-to-work vessels, following the “Wind of Change” and “Wind of Hope”, both of which also employ Schottel propulsion systems. The new generation introduces enhancements in energy efficiency, uptime, and onboard technology, including a 3D motion-compensated crane and an advanced gangway system.
The first vessel is expected to commence service in 2027 at Vattenfall’s DanTysk and Sandbank wind farms in the German sector of the North Sea. The second will follow the same year, serving the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms. An option for a third vessel is reserved for future North Sea projects.
