SCR test for Fairplay tug

The new Fairplay tug is currently under construction at Spain’s Astilleros Armon shipyard and is scheduled to go into operation at the Port of Rotterdam in 2015.

“This is one of the world’s first tests of high speed diesel engines equipped with an SCR system designed to meet the new NOx levels required by IMO Tier III. MTU will supply the two main 16V 4000 M63L propulsion engines and a 16 cylinder 4000 M23F diesel genset rated at 1520 kW for the tug. The SCR after treatment system will be connected to the diesel genset and works by neutralising the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas.

The 30m long tractor tug will be equipped with a combined diesel mechanical and diesel electric propulsion system. When entering and leaving the port, the diesel electric propulsion system with the SCR system will be used in most cases, but will be supplemented by the two main propulsion engines to provide additional propulsion when full power is required.

The tests on the tug upon completion will run for 10,000 hours and will help MTU prepare for the new IMO regulations.
