Screen wipers go hi-tech

UK-based Wynn Marine has developed a new touch screen system for controlling a large number of bridge window wipers. The touch screen is designed to be integrated with the company?s series 3000 control network and is capable of controlling up to 50 wipers either individually or in groups, with fast and slow speed operation. Intermittent operation can also be achieved at four, eight or 12 seconds intervals while the wash wipe facility synchronises the delivery of water with the wiper action. In freezing conditions an integral air purge control can be activated. Other shipboard systems can also be controlled from the touch screen, such as motorised anti-glare blinds and search lights. The first order for the system has recently been placed by P&O Princess Cruises. It will install 35 wiper blades and three touch screen control units on each of two 113,000g cruiseships currently under construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan. The company has also launched a range of stainless steel wiper arms for its M30, M50 and M80 coastal range of wiper products. Wynn claims that the use of hard wearing marine grade 316 stainless steel in the arm and drive shaft will improve reliability and extend the life of the wiper system.
