Seahorse 35000 exceeds expectation

The vessel, which is owned by Germany’s Nordic Hamburg, is powered by a Wärtsilä engine and is fitted with a 5.9m NPT propeller, designed by the UK’s Stone Marine Propulsion. It also features a Mewis duct, designed by Germany’s Becker Marine Systems, which provides significant fuel savings.

The contract originally required 14 knots at 5700 kW in 10.1m draft conditions but sea trial results revealed that the actual power demand to achieve this was only 5252 kW, 3.5% better than the model tests showed and 8% better than the contract requirement.

The NPR propeller, which has been designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, also offers low noise and vibration levels.

Nordic Hamburg has already ordered three more ships of this class, all of which are being fitted with NPT propellers. In total, NPT’s have been supplied, or are on order, for 20 ships in the Seahorse 35000 class.
