SES wins component contract for electric thruster motors

Scandinavian Electric Systems (SES) has entered a frame agreement with Rolls-Royce Marine for supply of low-voltage electric motors, motor starters and frequency converters

After evaluating a number of potential suppliers, Rolls-Royce Marine has selected Scandinavian Electric Systems (SES) as a supplier of motors and starters for Rolls-Royce Marine?s thruster systems. A new frame agreement primarily addresses components for thruster systems, but will also cover applications such as steering gear, for which SES recently commissioned its first delivery based on frequency converter drives to Rolls-Royce Marine.

“The choice was based on important criteria, such as quality, delivery performance, innovation ability, service and price,” says Jan Berg, President and CEO of SES. The agreement is valid through 2006, with an option for extension.

“We regard this as a confirmation of our ability to meet the requirements of demanding customers, to whom we offer high quality products. We have a staff of skilled and dedicated people who ? through quick response times and flexibility ? have proved that we can continuously adapt to the market,” Berg says.

“The development of so-called double-jacket water cooled motors commenced in 1997 and has been an unconditional success, in particular within the offshore vessel fleet. This has made SES market leader for this motor type. With its compact design, technical properties and power range, this motor type is well suited for azimuth thrusters and tunnel thrusters, as well as main propulsion duties for diesel-electric systems”.
