Shanghai shipyard breaks record

Shanghai Shipyard & Chengxi Shipyard Company Ltd has recently built a 3,500 TEU container vessel in only 54 days, breaking China’s record of 60 days for a mid-sized container vessel.

The shipyard’s accelerated shipbuilding technique has attracted more clients from the US and European countries and the yard has won enough orders to keep it fully occupied until the end of 2009. The state-owned yard upgraded its facilities and introduced new production practices when it moved to Chongmong Island from Lujiazui area in Pudong. At the old shipyard it would have taken more than 140 days to build 3,500 TEU container vessel.
