Shore power fitting

SAMCon will enable the vessels which call at the US west coast ports of Long Beach and Oakland to meet California’s upcoming strict clean air regulations.

Reinhard Swobada, senior vice president, L-3 SAM Electronics, said: “With SAMCon we are able to meet growing demand for the restriction of noise, carbon dioxide and other noxious emissions traditionally generated by vessels while berthed in the confines of heavily populated.”

The SAMCon facility will be installed at the stern of each vessel and comprises of a 40ft container housing a complete range of electrical components designed for seamless acceptance of up to 7.2 MVA transferable power at 6,600 volts. This works together with with a medium-voltage switchboard, control and monitoring facilities, and a customised interface between ship and shore.

The box also comes with an extendable cable reel drum for direct connection to shore-based power sources.

The system can be easily adapted for different types of vessels and container configurations. They are already in use around the world, with assemblies aboard Hapag Lloyd vessels docking at the California ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland, California.
