Siemens to equip AIDA newbuilds

The Siemens Industry Solutions (IS) Division is two equip two further cruise ships of AIDA Cruises with electrical and automation systems based on the Siship PAX platform.

The order was received from the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, which is building the new generation of 1,087 cabin Club ships. The scope of supply includes the electric propulsion system, the power generation and distribution systems and the automation system. The two 71,000 gt newbuildings will be put into service in Spring 2011 and 2012 respectively. This increases the number of AIDA cruise ships equipped by Siemens to six.

For the diesel-electric propulsion system of each ship, Siemens is supplying two 12 MW electric motors from the Siship Drive MV series. For the generation of electrical energy on board, four diesel generators with a total output of 48 MVA will be used. Power distribution will take place with the help of 11 kV medium-voltage ‘Siship Power MV’ equipment.

The ‘Siship Imac’ ship automation system will perform monitoring, alarm and control functions relating to all the on-board technical installations. This will involve the collection and processing of around 13,000 signals. All the technical equipment can be controlled by one person from a central engine control room with the help of user-friendly plant mimics.
