Soot solution

Unitor has added a liquid soot remover to its range. The product is injected into the exhaust manifold downstream of the turbo-charger and contains metals that act as a catalyst to burn the soot and inhibit the build up of deposits.

The company says the new liquid version works better at lower temperatures than the existing powder version because the injected liquid has finer atomisation and so covers a larger area. However, it adds that vessels successfully using the powder should not switch to the liquid.

The volume of liquid required depends on the fuel usage and Unitor gives the example of an engine using 50t of hfo per day will require 4.5 litre/day of the soot remover. This can be done manually or automatically in up to six injections per day.

In Zone 1 the list price of the liquid soot remover is 55NOK/litre ($7/litre).
