Successful sea trials for new Voith tug

During the trials, the tug achieved a speed of 13.5 knots and a bollard pull of 73.5 tonnes, stipulations required by the port authority – in fact the vessel achieved above and beyond these targets.

The two diesel engines supply Voith Schneider propellers with an input power of 2640 kW.

Not only did Voith deliver the complete propulsion system for the tug, it also provided the basic design of the tug in cooperation with the shipyard.

Stefan Moyé, managing director, Voith Turbo Marine Engineering, said to The Motorship: “The port already owns four Voith Water Tractors, what makes this contract important is that we haven’t just supplied the equipment, we have also worked on the design in conjunction with the shipyard.”

Haifa is one of the largest ports in Israel. In recent years traffic in the port has been on the increase along with the amount of goods to be handled – therefore the port authority has had to increase its fleet of tugs.

The Haifa tug contract was reported by The Motorship back in December last year.
