Titan completes first FuelEU pooling round

The company confirmed that the initial pool brought together several hundred vessels, including both over-compliant and under-compliant operators.

By combining these groups, Titan enabled those with compliance deficits to offset their positions against vessels generating surplus compliance, demonstrating the viability of pooling as a market mechanism.

“The conclusion of this first pooling round is providing the proof of concept for our FuelEU pooling service, which we are aiming to roll out to the benefit of even more over- and under compliant vessels in 2026 and the following years,” said Grégoire Hartig, commercial director at Titan.

Titan manages the pooling process end-to-end, including supplying over-compliant liquefied biomethane (LBM), onboarding or excluding vessels and ensuring independent verification.

The company also assumes full contractual responsibility across the value chain, allowing it to respond dynamically to both bunker fuel markets and compliance demands.

As part of the pool, Titan included its own bunker vessels. During this period, around 73% of LNG consumption by its Optimus vessel was derived from LBM, with the company expecting to reach 100% LBM usage in the next phase.

“Pooling was designed to provide a competitive advantage to all alternative fuels, with LNG and LBM in particular delivering on the regulation’s potential today,” continued Hartig.

“Our customers running LNG-fuelled vessels were able to benefit from their early investment into cleaner propulsion and several LNG fuelled vessels chose to run on LBM, backed by the value generated from pooling.”

Titan believes the results validate the structure of the FuelEU Maritime regulation introduced by the European Commission, particularly the flexibility offered by pooling. The mechanism is expected to play a growing role as shipowners seek to manage compliance costs, reduce emissions and capitalise on low-carbon fuel investments.
