Training to use a joystick

A bridge simulator developed by British Maritime Technology (BMT) is helping senior officers from cruise companies in the use of joystick control systems to manoeuvre their vessels. The joystick enables the captain to designate the direction in which to travel and the ship?s rate of turn, then an onboard computer controls the individual settings of the main engines, rudders and thrusters. It is designed to simplify the process of manoeuvring a vessel, giving the master more time to consider his future decisions and the effects of the surrounding environment, says BMT.

The PC Rembrandt (REal time Manoeuvring, BeRthing AND Training Simulator) bridge simulator software is an assessment, evaluation training tool for passenger ship masters, operators, managers and pilots. It contains a database of ports and vessels, mathematically modelled and validated against full-scale trials and feedback from experience ships? masters.
