Triton heading down under

Gardline Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Gardline Group in Great Yarmouth, UK, has signed a one-year contract for ?Triton? to augment the customs patrol boat fleet as the Australian Government strengthens its enforcement activities against illegal foreign fishing vessels.

The Australians selected the ?Triton? on the basis of her “range, speed, independent operating capability and economy of operations?” and the unique design and appearance of the vessel which will add a significant presence to Customs operations.

Built in the UK in 2000, the diesel-electric powered ?Triton? at 98m in length is the largest motor-powered trimaran in the world with a top speed of 20 knots and is capable of remaining at sea for extended periods.

Triton was built by VT Shipbuilding in the UK at two-thirds the size of a full-scale warship and designed as a demonstrator for the Royal Navy’s future surface combatant frigate requirement. The vessel was subjected to an extensive series of sea trials prior to purchase by Gardline Australia’s parent company Gardline Shipping Ltd UK to add to its existing fleet of 10 vessels.

Triton is currently undergoing modifications for its new task and will shortly be sailing for Australia.
