Two-stroke for Chinese tug

Two-stroke diesel engines from MAN B&W have been specified for a 90 metre long Chinese ocean going tug. The newbuilding is under construction at Wuchang Shipyard, Wuhan, China for the owner Shanghai Salvage, which operates a large fleet of various salvage tugs and harbour tugs. The Hong Kong-based Shen Hua Shipping Company Ltd will operate the newbuilding, which is scheduled to be delivered during April 2006.

The primary tasks of the SDARI-designed (Chinese Shanghai Design and Research Institute) vessel will be oceanic towing. Unusually for a tug, the 11,000kW power plant is based on two 8S35MC two-stroke engines each powering a VBS1080 CP propeller and an Alphatronic 2000 propulsion control system. The tug will have a service speed of 16 knots and a bollard pull of 188 tonnes.
