Type approval tests conclude for Wärtsilä’s X40

The TAT indicates that the engine fulfils classification society requirements, and can be fully introduced to the market following sea trials, which are now in progress. The trials include compliance with SOLAS standards, which dictate that a single engine installation must be capable of continuous operation under all conditions.

The Wärtsilä X40 and the associated, smaller, X35 feature Wärtsilä’s second-generation electronically controlled common rail fuel system with time controlled injection. The ‘generation X’ engines feature a high stroke to bore ratio in order to achieve lower engine speed and lower brake specific fuel consumption. The X45 incorporates the UNIC-flex control system. The X40 and X35 are aimed at smaller bulkers, product tankers and container feeder ships, a market segment where Wärtsilä says bit is successfully re-establishing its presence.

“The TAT validation procedure is comprehensive and very demanding and we are delighted to announce that the Wärtsilä X40 engine has passed this milestone with flying colours. The key value adding feature of this engine is that its high level of efficiency lowers the operational costs for owners, operators and charterers.
