Union agreement

Management at Malta Drydocks signed a new four year collective agreement with the General Worker?s Union on January 12, 2000.

“This agreement will ensure continued labour stability at the shipyard, and provide for increased efficiency and cost savings,” said the yard.

A new seven-member board of directors has also been appointed. It is headed by chairman J Cassar White, who is also chairman of the Marsa Shipbuilding yard. Six members have been appointed by the Maltese government; the seventh will be elected from the yard?s employees. In the past, four members were elected from the workforce and five were appointed by the government. All board members have non-executive status.

The shipyard is pushing ahead with implementation of a quality and safety system programme. The first British Safety Council safety audit will be carried out in April following a pre-audit survey in January.
