Vane is claimed to cut fuel consumption

The Hull Vane can be installed on newbuild ships or retrofitted to existing vessels

The company says that Hull Vane works by the upward flow at the stern of the vessel allowing the foil-shaped appendage to generate a forward thrust force, reducing the resistance of the vessel. At the same time, the foil reduces the running trim and the stern wave generated by the ship, and dampens pitch and heave motions in waves, reducing the added resistance caused by ship motions.

Hull Vane says that it has carried out sea trial comparison tests on Karina, a 55m fast supply intervention vessel, with and without Hull Vane. The tests are claimed to have confirmed earlier CFD calculations, which suggested a reduction in required shaft power ranging from 10% at 12 knots to 15% at 21 knots.

According to Hull Vane, its technology is particularly suitable for, but not limited to, ferries, passenger ships, container vessels, multi-purpose vessels, and ro-ro ships. The reduction in fuel consumption will depend on the ship’s length, speed, and hull shape, but the company says that proven fuel savings are likely to be in the 5% to 15% range.

The Hull Vane will be launched at SMM 2014, where a 4m replica will be demonstrated.
