VIDEO: IMO offers BWM training in Turkey

The training project in Turkey part of the organization’s efforts, under the GloBallast Partnerships Programme, to counter the threat to ecosystems by invasive species transported in the ballast water of ships.

The exercise brought together scientific experts, port state control inspectors and marine biologists from various countries with a view to understanding the possible challenges of implementing IMO’s Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.

“This training is important because port state control needs to take on a completely new field of work related to biological aspects – this is a new environment for them,” said marine biologist and trainer Dr Stephen Gollasch. “We’d like to take them to the point where they can at least perform an indicative analysis onboard a vessel.”
