Viking interest in more HAM

Viking Line, whose ferry Mariella now has a Munters/SEMT Pielstick humid air motor on each of its four main engines, has expressed interest in humid air motors for another of its ferries according to Pielstick. Pielstick adds that the sums add up in favour of the humid air motor if its is compared to selective catalytic reduction. It says the estimated installation cost of the humid air motor is ?51 ($46) per kilowatt. While this is over double the estimated installation cost of selective catalytic reduction (about $20/kW), the humid air motor has no running costs. Selective catalytic reduction meanwhile requires a constant supply of urea (or another reducing agent). This, says Pielstick, means that over 10 years selective catalytic reduction works out “two to three times more expensive” than the humid air motor.
