Viking ready for surge in immersion suit demand

From 1 July 2006 some 35,000 commercial vessels, which normally carry just three immersion suits, will need to have at least one for each person on board according to the ship?s manning instructions. Before Resolution MSC.152(78) was adopted in May 2004, only three suits were needed, for the ?man overboard? boat crew. Consequently, Viking Life Saving Equipment (VLSE) is advising owners to buy now and beat the rush.

“Cargo shipowners and operators are urged to purchase additional immersion suits well ahead of new Solas regulations entering force that require them to do so,” said J?rgen Holm, VLSE?s global sales manager for cargo ships. “We?re talking about hundreds of thousands of new immersions suits,” Holm said. “We are encouraging shipowners will start ordering now. If they leave it too late then there could be a problem.”

VLSE anticipates that the amendment will affect some 35,000 vessels, although ship types other than bulk carriers will not be affected by the rule as immersion suits are deemed unnecessary if a ship is constantly engaged on voyages in warm climates. Additionally, if a ship has any watch or work stations which are located remotely from the places where immersion suits are normally stowed, extra suits need to be provided in these areas for the number of people normally carrying out their duties at any time.

“Some countries ? including Canada and Iceland ? have already implemented the ?suits for all on board? regulations, but the number needed will still be huge,” Holm said. VLSE is investing considerable amounts to make sure the demand is met, not only for the supply of immersion suits but also for repair and maintenance: the company is establishing a global sales and servicing network for immersion suits to ensure that shipowners and operators can meet the requirement quickly and effectively.
