Waigaoqiao phase 2 started
Construction has now officially begun on the 1.2-billion-yuan ($146 million) second phase of China?s largest shipyard, the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. The project will further strengthen the shipyard’s leading position in China’s shipping industry since it will increase the shipbuilder’s annual capacity to 2.6 million DWT when completed in three years time.
Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is currently China’s largest shipyard as well as the most advanced in technology and the most modern in its means of production. Its first phase construction, which began in October 1999 and was completed in 2004, has already seen the construction of ten ships, a total 1.75 million DWT, making it the top shipbuilder in the country. This year, it expects to build more than 2 million DWT.
