Wartsila goes to India

Wartsila Group has identified India as a major base for sourcing components and parts for its global needs. “The group is looking at sourcing parts from India, in addition to sourcing trained manpower for our global requirements,” Head of Service, Wartsila India, Rakesh Sarin told a group of reporters.

Wartsila India has invested one million Euros in a new facility at its existing plant to manufacture marine reduction gear boxes in lower power range up to 2MW, primarily for exports. Production of lower gear ranges is expected to complement and support Wartsila Groups existing marine gear box ranges and to enable the company offer a complete optimised propulsion solution from one source.

“The new facility is expected to be ready before the end of this year and will cover the lower power end of Wartsila propulsion equipment portfolio,” he said. Exports of components and spare parts for the year 2004 stood at about one million Euros, he added.

Wartsila India?s assembly and testing unit is located at Khopoli, about 60 km from Mumbai. The plant is a major sourcing center for Wartsila Group and items include raw castings, machine castings, sub-assemblies, gear components, turning devices, hydraulic jacks and fabricated components.
