Wärtsilä outsources gear box production to Siemens

The decision was made because of the similarities in the production processes used by the companies, which are expected to secure quality and punctuality of service.

Arto Lehtinen, vice president of propulsion at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, said: “We believe that we have found the best possible partner for ensuring that our gear box offering is of the expected quality, and for being able to serve our customers in an efficient, reliable, and on-time way.”

Testing and assembly will be moved to Flender’s facilities in Voerde, Germany.

The design and technical specifications, as well as the delivery arrangements, project management and interfacing with shipyards and owners will remain Wärtsilä’s responsibility.

Wärtsilä’s gear boxes come in both single and two-speed variants, with various configurations and sizes.
