The vessel will cost BDT27.5 crore to build, they have been designed especially for the unique inland and coastal route they will be operating on.

The Bangladeshi government has issued fifty such licenses for new containerships which will operate on the same route and WMS has already secured orders for six of these.

The new ships serving PICT are all part of the strategy by the government to facilitate increased trade, WMS says that they will make a major contribution to the economy and crucially it says that it will make a difference to road traffic if more goods can be transported by river.

Last month, WMS signed a deal with Neepa Paribahan Ltd & Mir & Islam Enterprise for two newbuild containerships and so far the shipbuilder has built nine multi purpose container vessels which it has exported to Europe.

But recently, the shipyard has extended its capabilities and the immediate aim is to up this figure to at least 20 newbuild container vessels.
