Yang Ming expands methanol ready fleet with three 8,000 TEU containerships

This latest order follows the company’s March acquisition of three similar vessels, bringing the total number of methanol dual-fuel-ready ships in Yang Ming’s fleet to six, all of which are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030

These vessels form a key part of Yang Ming’s broader fleet optimisation strategy, recently approved by the Board of Directors. The plan will see the introduction of up to thirteen new containerships in the 8,000 to 15,000 TEU class, including the six 8,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel-ready ships and a further seven 15,000 TEU vessels equipped with LNG dual-fuel capability. The new tonnage is intended to replace older ships in the 5,500 to 6,500 TEU range, many of which have been in service for over two decades.

By adopting methanol-ready propulsion systems, Yang Ming aims to future-proof its operations in anticipation of tightening emissions regulations and shifting fuel landscapes. The methanol-capable ships will incorporate energy-efficient main engines and are designed to offer fuel flexibility, positioning the fleet to adapt to both regulatory developments and the gradual scaling of alternative fuel supply chains.

As part of its long-term commitment to sustainability and service reliability, Yang Ming is prioritising investment in next-generation tonnage that supports the decarbonisation of maritime transport. The latest methanol-ready additions underline the company’s intent to enhance its environmental performance while maintaining robust and competitive liner services in an evolving global shipping market.
