MAN to equip first LNG-powered trawler
The vessel will be built by Cemre Shipyard in Istanbul for Norwegian fishing company Liegruppen. It will feature a MAN 6L51/60DF main engine, Renk gearbox, MAN Alpha propeller system and MAN Cryo LNG fuel-gas system with a 350m3 tank.
Wayne Jones, chief sales officer, MAN Diesel & Turbo, described the vessel as ‘a pioneering project’. “At MAN we are convinced that low-emission gas fuels are the silver bullet to decarbonising the shipping industry and we have made it our mission to guide our customers through that transition,” he added.
The scope of the MAN Cryo fuel-gas system comprises a 350m³ vacuum insulated cylindrical type C tank; Tank connection space/coldbox with process equipment, manifold and instrumentation; emergency shut-down system; and bunker station for supply of LNG to tank.
The uprated MAN L51/60DF engine passed its type approval test in 2017. A nine-cylinder test engine had an output of 1,150kW per cylinder at a nominal speed of 500/514 rpm.
Under its ‘Maritime Energy Transition’ strategy, MAN considers natural gasses as the fuels of choice for shipping, and the most promising way to supporting the goal of a climate-neutral shipping industry.
