Wärtsilä systems for Exmar newbuilds

The two 80,000m3 very large gas carriers are being built for Belgian company Exmar at Hanjin Heavy Industries’ yard in Philippines’ Subic Bay. They will be powered by the first newbuild MAN ME-LGIP engines, which will be the first two-stroke engines capable of burning LPG as fuel.

Wärtsilä will provide an integrated cargo handling and fuel gas system for the ships under an order booked in July. The system is controlled by Wärtsilä’s Nacos Platinum integrated automation system in combination with the company’s remote process analytics software.

“Our aim has been to achieve the best possible operational and economic performance, while at the same time, ensuring the lowest possible environmental footprint. Wärtsilä’s systems and solutions will help us meet these targets,” said Pierre Dincq, managing director shipping, Exmar.

Nacos Platinum combines data from bridge navigation and communication controls, engine room, and cargo control centre. The integrated automation is said to reduce building and operating risks while increasing the energy efficiency of the fuel and cargo operations.

Wärtsilä will also deliver its Airguard anti-pollution shaft sealing system, which provides extra security against oil leaking into the sea. The propeller shaft mounted additional ‘air barrier’ ensures separation of the stern tube oil from the seawater.

The equipment is scheduled for delivery in mid-2019 and the vessels are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2020.
