Biggest battery packs for Havila Kystruten
As reported, the vessels are being designed by Havyard and will be built at Tersan shipyard in Turkey and Barreras in Spain. Their hybrid gas-electric propulsion system will incorporate four gas-powered engines driving generators as well as batteries, with a power output of 7,760kW.
They will each feature an energy storage system capable of generating 6,100kw/h. According to Havyard subsidiary Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), which will supply the battery systems, they will be more than double the size of the previous biggest marine battery installations. NES will deliver the complete hybrid propulsion system as well as an onshore charging system.
The order positions Havila Kystruten to meet Norway’s ban on emissions from ships in its fjords, scheduled for 2026, five years early, NES said.
“With this order, we will demonstrate that we have the right technology to meet future requirements for lower emissions and greener shipping,” said Tor Leif Mongstad, president and CEO, Norwegian Electric Systems.
NES will also deliver the generators, complete switchboard systems, transformers, frequency converters for the thruster engines and energy management systems. Sister company Norwegian Control Systems (NCS) will deliver an integrated automation system, integrated bridge solution and tank gauging system.
The equipment and systems order, which includes the first delivery of NCS’ new Raven integrated navigation system, is valued at more than NOK300 million (US$36.7 million).The vessels are expected in service from 2021.
