New Corvus battery factory in Norway

The new fully automated factory will be located at Midtun in Bergen and production equipment will be supplied by Raufoss-based Intek Engineering.

Geir Bjørkeli, chief executive of Corvus Energy, explained why the Bergen location was chosen. “First, feedback from customers stating the importance of being close to the market; second, co-location as Corvus Energy already has its European operation located in Bergen; and third, to contribute to the global-leading maritime cluster in Bergen,” he said.

The total investment is approximately $US 9.3M, financed through equity funding and loans from Norwegian finance group, DNB, and Innovation Norway. The factory will be fully operational in Q3 2019.

The automated production was developed through a concept study conducted with fellow Norwegian company, Sintef Manufacturing and will bring increased flexibility and scalability in addition to series production and new product implemention.

Gisle Frydenlund, executive vice president of operations and projects at Corvus Energy, said: “State-of-the-art production equipment in combination with digitalisation and innovative production techniques makes this a unique solution with a total capacity of 400 MWh.”

“We chose Intek Engineering from Raufoss to supply the equipment due to its extensive expertise and track record with automated production lines,” he added.

Corvus Energy is also upgrading its existing factory in Canada with a semi-automated production line to increase capacity. Together these two endeavours will increase Corvus Energy’s production capacity eight-fold.
