New scrubber technology is Lloyds approved

The Value Maritime Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) was developed as a small prefabricated, pre-installed, ‘plug and play’ product in a 20ft transportable casing, that filters the sulphur and ultrafine particulate matter (PM 2.5) from the exhaust gasses of vessels. The system assures compliance with the IMO 0,1% sulphur cap (SECA) for vessels from 2.0 MW to 6.0 MW.

Most certification test were performed during installation, but as the system uses a new technology further demonstrations outside SECA were required to receive class approval.

EGCS was tested on the first vessel on which it was installed, during voyages between the Netherlands and Russia in diverse and extreme conditions. A live data connection with the system allowed Value Maritime to monitor all data remotely. The commissioning engineer was also onboard to train the crew during the first voyage.

Particulate matter

Speaking about tackling particulate matter, Value Maritime stressed: “In the entire discussion about banning scrubbers in ports and coastal waters, we feel authorities forget the harmful effect that ultra-fine particulate matter has on people and the environment.”

It stated: “The exhaust from Marine Gas Oil has an even higher count of ultra-fine particulate matter and thus poses an increased health risk. Our unique scrubber system also filters ultra-fine particulate matter and will therefore benefit the environment while operating in ports and coastal waters using either Marine Gas Oil or HFSO”

Shipowners mostly opt for hybrid ready scrubbers, said Value Maritime, but confirmed its scrubber system is compatible as an open loop, closed loop or hybrid system.

The company is currently finalising new commercial orders.
