Tug powered by battery and hydrogen cell

The e5 Tug is equipped with a propulsion system running on the ‘e5 powertrain platform’, devised and developed by e5 Lab, which uses a large-capacity battery system as a main power source and a hydrogen fuel cell and generator as the auxiliary power source.

With a towing power of 50 tonnes and service speed of 14 knots, the tug will have two 1,500kW azimuth thrusters and operate in the Yokohama and Kawasaki ports.

This joint project is drawing upon Tokyo Kisen’s knowledge and experience of tugboat operation together with e5 Lab’s expertise in concept planning, design and project management. Advice will be sought from ClassNK, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and others to ensure regulatory compliance.

Commercial operation is scheduled for 2022.
