NES converts Fjord1 ferries to electric power

NES will supply battery systems, integrated electrical and automation packages for the three 125-car ferries serving the Halsa – Kanestraum ferry link.

The ferries, designed by LMG Marin in Bergen and built by Remontowa in Poland in 2009/2010, will become zero-emission once their gas engines have been converted to electric power. The scope of the contract comprises a QUEST II charging system that will be integrated into the existing ship’s propulsion systems, battery systems, charging plugs and transformers, an upgrade of the ships’ IAS and PMS systems and integration of the ship performance monitoring system.

The conversion of the ferries in the Moldefjord series is scheduled to start during the last half of 2020, and both ferry berths are being rebuilt with a complete land-based charging system.
