Hafnia and Viken Shipping agree term charter with Total for dual-fuel Aframaxes

The contract for the two Hafnia newbuildings has been awarded to Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI). The vessels are slated for delivery in 2023, when they will immediately be chartered by Total on long-term time charters. Viken Shipping’s two newbuildings are expected to be delivered in 2023, but no more details could be confirmed.

The 250-metre long Aframax tankers will feature 12 cargo tanks, with a load capacity of 133,500m3.

According to a Hafnia statement, the 110,000dwt Aframaxes will be powered by high-pressure dual-fuel engines. The vessels’ auxiliary engines will also be capable of operating on fuel oil or LNG.

The vessels’ deck-mounted Type C fuel tank will provide an LNG fuel capacity of 3,600 m3, which will offer an operational range of 13,500 nautical miles when sailing on LNG at 14.5 knots.

The LR2 tankers will emit 5,000 fewer tons of CO2 per year than conventional tankers, but also approximately 30% fewer than standard dual-fuel LNG vessels. As a result, the vessels will be compliant with Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 requirements, according to a Hafnia statement.

Luc Gillet, Senior Vice President Shipping at Total commented that the chartering contract was in line with the company’s Climate Ambition and will contribute to it Net Zero carbon neutrality target by 2050 or before.

Total confirmed the contract for LNG bunkering has been awarded to Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions.
