Dual-fuel barges for European river network
With main dimensions of about 110m x 11.5m, and drawing just 3.25m, the barges have been designed to maximise cargo carrying capacity on Dutch, Belgian and German canal and river networks.
The vessels have been earmarked for the transportation of mineral oils from Amsterdam, Antwerp and Rotterdam to destinations along the Rhine River network. The vessel will offer a 3,028m³ cargo volume in a total of eight tanks.
The design features a deck-mounted Type C LNG storage tank, which provides 60m³ capacity. This will provide sufficient endurance for round trips between Rotterdam and Basel in Switzerland.
Martin van Veen, freight trading manager, of Shell explained the choice of Concordia Damen, saying, “Concordia Damen has a proven track record in the delivery of products that are highly efficient and sustainable. In addition, they have demonstrated their capabilities in the delivery of shallow draught vessels – which is of importance to this project. We are looking forward to the collaboration.
The barge’s two main engines are dual-fuel engines, producing 566kW apiece. The barge features two modern propellers of 1500mm diameter operating in a high efficiency (HR) nozzle. The installation is expected to provide a speed capability of over 8.5 knots.
The design also features four rudder units. The rudder units are electrically driven with power being supplied by the generator sets. The design features a 1200mm bow thruster, rated at 4,004kW.
Concordia Damen will begin construction of the tankers in December this year. The delivery of the first vessel will be in November 2021. After that, the yard will deliver another vessel each month, completing the order by December 2024.
