Schottel invests €500K in new crane system
The new €500,000 system is said to ensure a faster and more efficient production process and replaces the previous system installed in 1979.
“The Wismar subsidiary focuses on the development and assembly of propulsion units for special purpose vessels,” explained subsidiary manager, Dr Michael Potts. “Nowadays, these vessels are designed with larger dimensions and more power, which has an impact on the project planning for the propulsion units and their production.
“This acquisition makes us more efficient and is an investment to ensure our site remains competitive in the future,” he added.
The new system comprises two double-girder overhead travelling cranes with a load bearing capacity of 50 tonnes each. This represents approximately 10 tonnes more load bearing capacity than previously and is needed for the larger, longer and heavier products.
The crane features synchronous mode, meaning that the hoist, crab and crane trolleys can be controlled individually or synchronously by radio transmitter. This equipment makes it possible to transport very heavy, long loads safely through the production hall and to turn and position them with precision.
