The order was confirmed after a major energy company announced the signature of long-term charter agreements for four VLCCs with Advantage Tankers, and three apiece with AET and International Seaways.

The engine order has been placed with licensee HSD Engine in Korea. The vessels will also be built in South Korea at DSME. While no date was given for the delivery of the engines, the first vessel was scheduled to be delivered in 2022.

The order was the first for the high-pressure dual-fuel engine from the VLCC segment. Bjarne Foldager, Senior Vice President and Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, added that the order was significant for its size. “The engine’s characteristics make it eminently suitable for LNG and non-LNG carriers alike due to its service experience, low methane slip, high efficiency, and fuel flexibility – whether running on fuel-oil, or LNG where it accepts any gas quality available in the market.”

The new order follows a number of orders announced in recent months. MAN Energy Solutions stated in January 2021 that its low-speed, dual-fuel references in their entirety then exceeded 360 units, with the ME-GI recording over 1.5 million operating hours on LNG alone.
