Chinese engine builder launches first low-speed Otto Cycle engine platform

The engine, designated the CX40DF, will be made available in the 400mm-bore size, and will be the world’s smallest bore marine Otto cycle engine. The new engine type will generate more than 5,000kW.

The company announced on 2 April that the first CX40DF engine will be installed in a 9,500cbm multi-purpose gas carrier under construction for Chinese shipowner Tianjin Southwest Shipping. The 400mm-bore type will be suitable for vessels of between 10,000 to 30,000dwt.

The dual-fuel engine is intended to utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its main fuel. The new engine is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 20% compared with conventional diesel engines.

The project involved research into technologies such as pre-chamber ignition, dynamic oxygen concentration control, integrated gas pressure regulation, and low-emission premixed combustion.

The new engine platform is claimed to be the first in the world to use ‘dynamic oxygen concentration control’ technology. This has increased the engine’s power by 4% and significantly reduced fuel/gas consumption, according to China Shipbuilding Power Group.

Apart from the development of the Otto Cycle engine itself, the project has also seen the independent development of the electronic control system, as well as the turbocharger and other core components. In all, 80% of the parts in the project were produced locally.
