Tsuneishi receives AiP for dual-fuel Kamsarmax design

The new KAMSARMAX GF measures 229 metres in length, and retains the wide beam of 32 metres, and shallow draft of Tsuneishi’s Wide Kamsarmax design. The design has a depth of 20 metres. Tsuneishi’s Wide Kamsarmax design achieved an increase in loading capacity of 6,000t compared with Tsuneishi’s previous Kamsarmax design.

According to Tsuneishi, the KAMSARMAX GF-design is designed to operate primarily on LNG as fuel. The design is expected to lower CO2 emissions from the vessel by 40%, and will exceed the requirements of EEDI Phase 3, which will come into effect in 2025.

The Japanese shipbuilder announced the award last week. The design represents an important development by Tsuneishi, which is a specialist in bulker design and construction, and has been one of the market leaders in terms of deliveries of Panamax and post-Panamax bulkers since 2007. The Motorship notes that until now adoption of LNG as a fuel among 50,000-100,000dwt vessels has been somewhat slower than among other types of bulker.

The development forms part of an increasing focus on LNG and alternative fuels at Tsuneishi. The Motorship reported that a dual-fuel hydrogen-HSFO passenger ferry destined for operation off Kyushu in Japan was ordered from Tsuneishi’s affiliate Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft in 2019.
