WINGD X82DF PASSES TYPE APPROVAL TEST
The seven-cylinder model of the 820mm-bore engine which passed testing was certified for Tier III compliance. The test combined physical and remote participants, with representatives from China Classification Society (CCS), Bureau Veritas and DNV attending in person, while lead surveyors participated remotely from their headquarters.
The vessel, which will be the world’s first LNG-fuelled VLCC, was part of a series of VLCCs ordered by COSCO Shipping Energy. The specific engine is rated for a maximum continuous output of 22,500kW.
The type approval test (TAT) was organised by WinGD’s Classification & Standards Team, which supported the TAT remotely from Winterthur. The company noted in a public statement that “due to the global pandemic restrictions, it took a well-coordinated global effort by all to make the TAT a success.”
The engine was the first X-DF engine to be built by engine licensee CSE-QMD, extending the number of engine licensees with dual-fuel engine building expertise within the CSSC group.
WinGD noted that the X82DF-1.0 completed WinGD’s portfolio of low-pressure, dual fuel engines which spans the full range of engine bores from 40 cm to 92 cm.
Combining both liquid and gas fuel capabilities, the X82DF-1.0 is available in 6-cylinder to 9- cylinder configurations and covers a power range from 16,560 to 49,500kW at 58 to 84rpm.
