FuelSaves FS+ methanol injection solution selected for first MaK retrofit
Van Oord announced plans to install the solution onboard its 154-metre long 14,000dwt subsea rock installation vessel Bravenes in March 2021. The SRI was designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions, and entered service with Van Oord in 2018. The vessel is powered by two MaK main movers, rated at which will be fitted with the FuelSave FS MARINE+ solution.
The installation is noteworthy as it represents the first time that FuelSave’s solution has been fitted to a MaK engine. Van Oord also noted that it will be the first time that the solution is used with a Kongsberg Vessel Insight integration for a DP3 operation.
The FS+ system, developed by Germany-based technology developer FuelSave, injects hydrogen, oxygen and methanol mix at three precisely calibrated different locations along the air intake of a four-stroke engine.
“Our product optimises the energy consumption and the environmental impact significantly irrespective of a vessel’s fuel type. We are not treating a symptom but tackling the root of the problem by means of advanced combustion conditioning using hydrogen and methanol. The cleaner combustion provides additional potential greenhouse gas emission reduction, such as CO2, NOx and Black Carbon,” said Marc Sima, ceo of FuelSave.
“Van Oord is always looking for new technologies that contribute to the efficiency increase of our vessels and making them cleaner. We believe that this is a satisfactory and affordable short-term solution to support that goal,” Job Voormolen, Manager R&D and Innovation at Van Oord noted.
