KR signs SOFC MoU

The Korea Register (KR) will collaborate with STX Energy Solutions and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering on the standardisation and commercialisation of SOFC technology for maritime applications.

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) produces electricity through the electrochemical reaction of oxygen and hydrocarbons from oxidising LNG.

STX ES will lead development and supply of SOFC systems for ships. DSME will manage the onshore evaluation of SOFC systems as well as a demonstration project. KR will evaluate and certify the technical capabilities of SOFC products for ships and will ratify and revise related regulations for safe ship mounting and operation.

The companies aim for standardisation that will allow the technology to be applied to different types of ships in the future.
