Yanmar reaches SCR milestone

SCR is an exhaust purification technology to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from diesel engines. YPT developed its SCR system which can independently meet IMO Tier 3 regulations which require a significant NOx reduction of 80% compared to Tier 1 regulations.

The system features a compact design that leverages proprietary technology and know-how to improve the ease of installation on vessels and optimal control that incorporates the company’s own Yanmar’s 6EY and 8EY diesel engines.

Its by-pass branching section and catalytic reactor have been integrated into a single unit, achieving high-performance NOx reduction.

Engines equipped with the SCR system obtain NOx certification (Scheme A ), whilst maintaining performance onboard. Additionally, a urea injection nozzle is installed downstream from the branching section, preventing ammonia from leaking into the by-pass line.

The control unit integrates all devices including catalytic reactors mounted to each individual engine. A single pump unit and control panel can manage system for multiple engines, allowing the system to remain compact.

In May, smartphone connectivity was added to the system and Yanmar is working to reduce the time ship crews spend on engine management, proposing maintenance appropriate to engine conditions.

The firm said is working to realise a more sustainable future by incorporating engines, products and services that improve whole life cycle value.
