Corvus to supply ESS for CSOVs

Corvus has been awarded the contract to supply ESSs for four CSOVs to be built for Olympic.

The vessels will have hybrid battery propulsion and are based on the ULSTEIN SX222 design with TWIN X-STERN from Ulstein Design & Solutions AS. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in spring and summer 2023.

The contract is noteworthy as it represents the largest battery installation for SOVs to date, according to Corvus Energy.

Ulstein Power & Control will integrate the battery-based ESSs into the hybrid-electric propulsion system. The vessels will be able to operate in Dynamic Position mode on a single engine augmented by battery power, to operate more efficiently in transit and other operational modes, and to operate on battery-power only when stationary. 

During operation, the offshore wind service vessels will stay positioned at the turbines most of the time, and with the main propellers fore and aft, these vessels will reduce the energy requirement to a new level when on DP.

The vessels are prepared for methanol fuel and have available space for additional battery capacity for full-electric repowering when the infrastructure for such is available.
