Thun extends battery-hybrid coastal tanker orders with Ferus Smit

Thun Tankers has ordered 4 additional R-class battery-hybrid shortsea tankers from Ferus Smit.

The four 7,999dwt product carrier newbuildings are due to be delivered from the fourth quarter of 2024. The first two vessels in the series are scheduled for delivery from the Westerbroek yard in the Netherlands in the first half of the same year.

The R-class vessels feature an onshore power connection in addition to a battery/diesel hybrid arrangement, which is intended to improve fuel efficiency. The class will be powered by 1,950kW main engines.

The R-class vessels will meet Ice Class 1A criteria, allowing the vessels the flexibility to operate in the Baltic around the year.

Erik Thun Group has also placed an order with Scheepswerf Ferus Smit for four 5,100dwt multi-purpose dry cargo vessels capable of operating within Sweden’s inland waterways.
