Chart expands maritime carbon capture and hydrogen focus

Chart has solutions including leading compression technologies, storage and transport equipment, liquefaction technology, cryogenic carbon capture and end-use capabilities across the value chain for both gaseous and liquid hydrogen handling. It extended its product portfolio in March 2023 following the acquisition of gas handling specialist Howden.

Carbon capture 

Chart has been active in the carbon capture area, extending the scope of an existing Memorandum of Understanding with US-based technology developer Wolf Carbon Solutions U.S. LLC on 13 April 2023. The agreement envisages the installation of Chart’s Cryogenic Carbon Capture technology along Wolf’s recently announced Mt. Simon Hub carbon pipeline system linking Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to central Illinois. The CO2 pipeline would be the first with carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) capabilities in the US Midwest.

Chart is also supplying Cryogenic Carbon Capture technology as part of the pilot phase of the Greensand Project, which envisages cross-border, offshore CO2 storage in the North Sea. A Final Investment Decision on the project, which will see CO2 transported by ship to the depleted Nini West oil field in the North Sea from the port of Antwerp, is expected in H2 2024. In February 2023, leading consortium partners INEOS and Wintershall Dea received the necessary storage license from the Danish authorities.   

Hydrogen fuel cell

Both Chart and TECO 2030 are participating in EU-funded PEM fuel cell retrofit projects involving swappable hydrogen storage. TECO 2030 is participating in HyEkoTank, which aims to retrofit a 2.4 MW PEM fuel cell aboard a Bitumen tanker, using compressed hydrogen storage vessels installed in ISO containers.

Chart is participating in the sHYpS project, which aims to develop a retrofittable 5.4 MW fuel cell system for installation on board commercial vessels, using a liquid hydrogen storage system installed in ISO containers.
