Capesize bulker in biofuel success

The fuel was delivered to Cape Amal by independent marine energy supplier, Peninsula, whilst at port in Hong Kong on 11 August. The vessel began using the biofuel two weeks later on the 29th.

Marine biofuel has the potential to become an environmentally friendly alternative fuel, and the FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) component of the marine biofuel is said to reduce CO2 emissions by around 84% in the well-to-wake process without changing current engine specifications.

The particular blend used comprises 24% of FAME mixed with very low sulphur fuel oil and uses renewable organic resources such as biomass which is made without using foodstuff or feed crops.

In its ‘Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future’ K Line has set out its 2030 interim target of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% compared with 2008, surpassing the IMO goal of 40%.

The company is also working on ‘The Challenge of Achieving Net-Zero GHG Emissions’, its new set of targets for 2050.
