First Japanese hydrogen fuel cell vessel delivered

The vessel will be operated by MOTENA-Sea, a company backed by MOL and other investors, and is expected to enter service later in April 2024. 

The vessel features a low temperature PEMFC marine fuel-cell system featuring twin 240kW fuel cells supplied by Yanmar.

The vessel is Japan’s first hybrid passenger ship to use both hydrogen and biodiesel and operates using an onboard electric propulsion system.

The vessel features a hydrogen fuel supply system using high-pressure tanks supplied by Toyoda Gosei Co. Ltd. The supplier announced plans to develop higher capacity compressed gas storage solutions in March 2023, based on storage solutions developed for Toyota Motor’s MIRAI fuel cell powered vehicle.  

Yanmar PT took charge of the ship’s comprehensive power system design, incorporating two hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, biodiesel generators, power management system, propulsion equipment, remote monitoring, and other elements.
