Biofuel push in Singapore
Founded in March 2022 and led by Kuok Maritime Group, the Coastal Sustainability Alliance comprises 27 companies all dedicated to advancing the country’s decarbonisation efforts.
Spearheaded by alliance members, Green COP and Ken Energy, the CSA will spend the next two years developing stable B30, B40 and B50 biofuels.
“We are laying the groundwork for a new biofuel supply chain and providing a viable alternative in the energy transition for the maritime sector,” said Tan Thai Yong, managing director, strategic projects and technology, Kuok Maritime Group and chair of CSA.
“This initiative is more than advancement in fuel technology as it exemplifies the power of collaboration, underscoring the CSA’s role as steward and catalyst for positive change in the maritime industry.”
The B50 blend presents is significant improvement in reducing carbon emissions. For every tonne burned emissions are reduced to 1.5 mt compared with the B30 blend’s of 2.1 mt. By including Biobutanol, a key component of the B50 blend, the fuel is even more energy efficient.
Green COP will bring its expertise in the form of proprietary technology specialising in the conversion of plant-based biowaste into biofuels whilst Ken Energy will play a key role in the commercial use of Biobutanol.
This latest initiative follows a key CSA milestone – the construction of the largest locally designed and built electric tug and supply boat. Scheduled for operation in 2025, the PXO fleet will also operate with the new biofuel options.
